What Causes Heel Pain?

Pain directly on the bottom of the heel is the most common form of heel pain. Heel pain seems to be worse upon rising in the morning or standing up after being seated. Pain in heel can be a sharp, searing pain, or can manifest itself as a “ripping” feeling in the heel. Heel and ankle pain can begin to radiate up the back of the leg, or can also radiate into the arch.

To understand how heel pain can occur, an understanding of simple foot anatomy is helpful. The plantar fascia acts like your foot’s shock absorber. With each step, as your foot hits the ground, it flattens out. The plantar fascia is stretched slightly, with the action of the step.

Any action that causes the foot to flatten more than a normal range will stretch this ligament past its normal limits. An example of this would be a step where more than the usual amount of weight is on the foot, or a step taken at an odd angle. This could occur while playing sports, or from an accident. This type of step often causes an injury, in which the plantar fascia tears slightly. A small amount of bleeding can occur, and tension from plantar fascia on the heel bone can cause a spur to form on the bottom of the heel.

Diagnosis of Heel Pain

A podiatrist will make a diagnosis of heel pain through a history of the of the patient’s condition, and by physical exam.
